Bing Webmaster Tools in 2026: New Features, Copilot Integration, and Why Bing SEO Suddenly Matters

1B+
monthly active users across Microsoft's Copilot-powered surfaces in 2026, all drawing from Bing's index

For years, Bing Webmaster Tools was the afterthought in SEO — set up once, occasionally checked, and mostly ignored because Bing had roughly 3% of global search market share and the traffic difference between ranking well in Google and ranking well in Bing was negligible for most sites. That calculus changed in 2024 and has changed further in 2026. Microsoft Bing's index now powers ChatGPT Search, Copilot in Windows, Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps, Edge's sidebar search, and Bing.com's AI-powered search results. The cumulative reach of Bing's indexed content across all these surfaces is now measured in billions of monthly impressions. Getting your site indexed correctly in Bing has a direct multiplier effect across every Microsoft AI product.

01

Why Bing SEO Matters More Than Ever in 2026

Microsoft's integration strategy has created a situation where Bing's web index is the input for a remarkably broad set of AI-powered products. ChatGPT Search (launched late 2024) uses Bing's index as its primary real-time web source. Microsoft Copilot — embedded in Windows 11, Microsoft 365, Edge, and sold as a standalone product — performs web searches against Bing's index for any question that requires current information. Bing.com itself has been redesigned around AI-generated answers with cited sources.

The combined monthly active user base of these Bing-powered surfaces is larger than Bing.com itself, by a significant margin. A page that is not well-indexed in Bing is invisible to ChatGPT Search users, Copilot users, and Edge sidebar users — all of which represent fast-growing audience segments, particularly among professional and enterprise users who are Microsoft 365 customers. For B2B sites and sites targeting professionals, this makes Bing SEO a meaningful priority that was not the case in 2022.

Setting Up Bing Webmaster Tools: The Basics

If your site is not yet set up in Bing Webmaster Tools, this is the highest-priority action in this guide. Setup takes under 15 minutes.

  1. Go to bing.com/webmasters and sign in with a Microsoft account
  2. Click 'Add a site' and enter your domain
  3. Verify ownership using one of three methods: XML file upload, meta tag, or CNAME DNS record. The meta tag is simplest for most CMS platforms
  4. Submit your XML sitemap URL in the Sitemaps section
  5. Enable IndexNow (see below) for instant URL submission
  6. Set up email notifications for crawl errors, security issues, and manual actions
  7. Connect to Google Search Console via the GSC import feature to import verified properties without re-verification
03

IndexNow: The Feature Every Site Should Be Using

IndexNow is an open protocol co-developed by Microsoft and Yandex that allows websites to notify search engines instantly when a URL is published, updated, or removed. Instead of waiting for Bing's crawler to discover your new content on its next scheduled crawl — which may take days to weeks for lower-priority pages — IndexNow pings Bing (and any other participating search engine) the moment you publish or update a URL.

IndexNow is now supported by Bing, Yandex, and several other search engines. Google has not adopted the protocol as of 2026 — Google has its own Search Console URL inspection and sitemap submission mechanisms — but for Bing specifically, IndexNow dramatically reduces the time between publishing new content and having it appear in Bing's index and Bing-powered AI answers. For news sites, blogs publishing time-sensitive content, and e-commerce sites that update product availability frequently, this speed improvement is meaningful.

Implementing IndexNow: generate an IndexNow API key in Bing Webmaster Tools, host the verification file at your domain root, then submit URL notifications via a simple HTTP GET or POST request to the IndexNow endpoint whenever content is published or updated. Most popular CMS platforms (WordPress, Webflow, Shopify) now have IndexNow plugins or built-in support.

New Features Added in 2025–2026

Bing Webmaster Tools has received more substantial feature updates in the past 18 months than in the preceding five years combined. Here are the most significant additions.

  • Copilot Citation Report. The newest report in Bing Webmaster Tools shows data on queries where your site appeared as a cited source in Bing AI answers and Copilot responses. Similar to Google's AI Overviews report in GSC, this shows which pages are being cited, impression counts, and click rates from citations. This is currently in rollout and may not be available to all Webmaster Tools users.
  • Deep Link Analysis. An enhanced backlink report that shows not just inbound links to your site but the semantic context around each link — the surrounding text, the topical category of the linking page, and whether the link is followed or attributed. This context is used by Bing's AI ranking systems to evaluate link quality beyond raw anchor text.
  • Keyword Research Integration. Bing Webmaster Tools now includes a keyword research feature powered by Bing's search data, showing search volumes, competition levels, and suggested keyword variations. While less comprehensive than dedicated tools, it provides direct insight into Bing's view of keyword demand — which can differ meaningfully from Google's data for certain query types.
  • Page Performance Score. A page-level performance metric that aggregates Core Web Vitals data, mobile usability, and HTTPS status into a single score for each URL in your site. Pages scoring below threshold are flagged with specific recommendations. This is distinct from Google's Page Experience report and reflects Bing's own evaluation of page quality.
  • Malware and Security Scanning. Enhanced security scanning that runs continuously against your indexed pages and alerts you when Bing's crawlers detect malware, phishing indicators, or unusual JavaScript injection. The alert system is faster than the equivalent Google notification in many reported cases.

Bing's Ranking Factors in 2026: What Is Different from Google

Bing and Google evaluate pages using broadly similar signals — relevance, authority, page experience — but with meaningfully different weightings that affect which optimisations matter most.

  • Social signals. Bing has historically given more weight to social signals (shares, engagement on Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Facebook) than Google. Pages with strong social sharing patterns are more likely to rank well in Bing. This makes maintaining an active social presence more directly tied to Bing SEO than to Google SEO.
  • Exact-match domains and anchor text. Bing's algorithm responds more strongly to exact-match anchor text in backlinks than Google's current algorithm. Google has heavily discounted exact-match anchor text since the Penguin update, but Bing's weighting is still more responsive to it.
  • On-page keyword presence. Bing places somewhat more weight on keyword presence in on-page signals (title tag, H1, meta description, URL) than Google, which relies more on semantic understanding. Ensuring your exact target keyword appears in the title tag is more directly impactful for Bing than for Google.
  • Domain age. Older domains with longer crawl histories tend to rank more reliably in Bing than equivalent newer domains. The effect is more pronounced in Bing than in Google for competitive queries.
  • Structured data. Both engines respond positively to structured data, but Bing's Webmaster Tools documentation explicitly lists Schema.org types that Bing's AI systems use for citation selection — FAQ, Article, Recipe, Product, Event, and HowTo are all highlighted as high-value.

Submitting Your Robots.txt and Sitemap to Bing

Before Bing's crawlers can index your site, they need to be able to access your pages. Two critical files govern this: robots.txt and your XML sitemap. Validate that your robots.txt does not inadvertently block Bingbot (or any AI crawlers that use Bing's index) using the Robots.txt Validator at /tools/robots-txt-validator. Many sites added blanket AI crawler blocks in 2024 without realising that Bingbot is used by ChatGPT Search to source real-time information.

Submit your sitemap URL directly in Bing Webmaster Tools under Sitemaps. Bing accepts XML sitemaps in the same format as Google — if you already have a sitemap for Google Search Console, submit the same URL to Bing. For dynamic sites or sites that update frequently, also implement IndexNow to supplement the sitemap-based crawl discovery with instant URL notifications.
