What is Lorem Ipsum and why do designers use it?
Lorem Ipsum's origin is a garbled excerpt from 'de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum' (On the Ends of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. The standard Lorem Ipsum passage beginning with 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet...' has been the design industry's default placeholder text since the 1960s, when Letraset introduced it on dry-transfer sheets. Desktop publishing software like PageMaker popularised it digitally in the 1980s, and it has remained standard ever since.
The practical reason designers reach for placeholder text rather than writing real content is to separate the design review process from the content review process. When a mockup contains actual draft copy, reviewers invariably focus on the words rather than the layout. Placeholder text sidesteps this entirely - everyone understands it is temporary, so attention stays on spacing, font choices, line lengths, and visual hierarchy.
There are several variants beyond the classical Lorem Ipsum passage. Designers sometimes use themed generators (cat ipsum, cupcake ipsum, corporate ipsum) to add a touch of humour to internal mockups. For more realistic placeholder text in UI components like user profile cards or product listings, some prefer natural-language placeholders in the target language rather than Latin, to better simulate real line breaks and word lengths.
One important caveat: Lorem Ipsum should never reach a production environment. It is a red flag in content audits and can confuse search engines if indexed. Always include a pre-launch checklist step that explicitly checks for placeholder text before going live. A word counter or text search across your CMS content can catch it before it becomes a problem.
