What is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and how is it different from SEO?

Short answer
Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that AI-powered answer engines - including ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Claude - surface your content when answering questions. Unlike traditional SEO, which targets ranked lists of blue links, AEO targets the direct answer layer where a single source is cited or quoted. AEO prioritises question-based content, schema markup, concise short answers, and E-E-A-T signals over keyword density and backlink volume.

Traditional SEO has operated on a simple model for 25 years: rank as high as possible in a list of results, earn a click, drive traffic. AEO disrupts this by inserting a zero-click layer - an AI-generated answer that absorbs the user's query without sending them anywhere. The user gets their answer, and the sources cited may or may not receive a visit.

The implication is not that SEO is dead, but that the content formats and structural signals that AI engines reward are different from those that influence traditional rankings. An AI answering "what is X?" wants a clear, accurate, self-contained definition paragraph that it can lift and cite. It rewards: structured Q&A formats where the question is explicit and the answer is immediate, factual density (specific numbers, named examples, dates rather than vague generalities), and credibility signals (E-E-A-T - demonstrated expertise, author credentials, cited sources).

AEO content strategies include: creating dedicated question-and-answer pages targeting long-tail informational queries, adding FAQPage JSON-LD schema so AI systems understand the Q&A structure, using concise "answer-first" writing (state the answer in the first sentence, then elaborate), citing primary sources and data, and ensuring your site appears authoritative on a topic through a cluster of related content rather than a single page.

The key metric for AEO success is "AI impressions" or "answer appearances" - how often your brand or content is cited in AI-generated responses. Unlike traditional organic rankings which you can monitor in Google Search Console, AI citation tracking is an emerging category of tooling. Platforms that monitor brand mentions across AI responses are the AEO equivalent of rank trackers.

AEO and SEO are complementary, not competing disciplines. A page that ranks well in traditional search and is structured for answer engines captures traffic from both the ranked list and the AI summary layer.
